Approach 1: Disk Management Method

With the help of Disk Management, you can mount/ unmount VHD files. The steps are shown below:

  • Right-click on the PC and click on Manage.

  • Now in the Computer Management dialogue box, under Storage, right-click on Disk Management and click on Attach VHD option.

  • For unmount VHD/VHDX disk, right-click on the newly created volume and click on Detach VHD option.
Approach 2: Command Prompt Method

This method is used for Windows 10, 8, 7 to mount or unmount VHD/VHDX file. The steps are mentioned below:

Step 1: Press Win+X keys, and click on Command Prompt (Admin) mode. In the command prompt, type diskpart and tap the Enter button. Enter the following command to select the VHD/VHDX file by providing its location.

Select vdisk file = “location of VHD file”

Step 2: Type “attach vdisk” and press Enter for mount the VHD/VHDX file.

Steps 3: For unmount a VHD/VHDX file, write “detach vdisk” and press Enter.

Approach 3: Windows Explorer Method

This method is an easy one to mount and unmount VHD & VHDX file. Follow the following steps:

Step 1: In Windows, right click on the VHD/VHDX file and choose Mount VHD. The VHD disk is added to your system this will be an additional drive. You can perform any actions like copy, move or access the data from the drive. It will act as a physical storage.

Step 2: In the newly created volume or drive, by right-click and choose Eject to disconnect or unmount.
